Failure Date: Gm service bulletin 14882 while driving my 2012 chevy Equinox it died suddenly without warning on a city street. No warning lights, or nothing to indicate a problem. I was luckily able to get to a safe location where I noticed a trail of oil and oil severely leaking out from underneath my vehicle. I had it towed to a chevy dealership and the pcv valve is plugged and caused the rear main seal to leak. My VIN number is not covered in the gm service bulletin 14882 even though it is the exact same issue. This is a hazard for drivers as there was no warning at all of an issue and my vehicle died suddenly.See. Failure Date: Certified pre-owned 2013 chevy Equinox purchased in 2015, michigan.

Winter, 2018. While driving, my vehicle began to lurch while accelerating from a stop. At the next stop, the rpms bean to act erratic, teetering above and below 1000. The vehicle then completely stalled.

The Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal Replacement procedure in SI states. As the owner of a 2014 Equinox with this PCV/Main Rear Seal issue. I could not be more unhappy with the response that I have received from my local dealer.

This occurred several times on my way to my destination. Each time, as I accelerated, it lurched and I feared it would stall out. Took it into the dealer, they gave me a diagnostic that said spark plugs. Car drove ok for a month. Then a deep freeze came. Same issue occurred.

I checked my oil (because these vehicles have a problem with oil consumption) pressurized air blew out of the dipstick, it was also 2 quarts low-I had just gotten my oil changed 4 weeks prior. Put some oil in and drove. Stalled at busy intersection stop. Got to my destination to discover a trail of oil behind my vehicle. Got it towed to dealership. Diagnosed as a blown rear main seal due to a frozen pcv valve.

This is a well-known issue with Equinoxes, enough that there is a service bulletin (14882). My experience/symptoms match the condition description of the bulletin to a t, however, for some reason, my VIN does not fall under coverage for this engineering flaw.

Replacement

Chevy knows this is a safety issue, yet they still refuse to recall the vehicles. In the meantime, I'm stuck paying an $1800 bill to get the rear main seal fixed-without any regard for the pcv valve, crankcase, or oil consumption issue that contribute to the problem.

2013 Chevy Equinox Rear Main Seal Replacement

Failure Date: While driving to the gas station, and then to work, my vehicle got very sluggish while going down the highway but then resumed normal operation. I stopped to get gas and look over the exterior of the vehicle and found nothing to be out of the ordinary.

I filled the gas tank and proceeded to drive the 1 mile to my place of employment. When pulling into the parking lot, I began hearing a knocking sound that I recognized immediately. I parked the vehicle immediately and looked around again. That is when I saw the oil on the ground. I examined the engine to look for the source of the oil leak. The oil filter, drain plug, and drain pan all were clean and dry. There was oil on the frame and the underside of the floorboard that can be seen from underneath the vehicle.

After a few internet searches, I found a service bulletin (#14882) that told me everything that had happened. The temperature was well below freezing that day and it was snowing. I have a strong suspicion that the water that had made it's way into the pcv system had frozen, the pressure built up until it forced the rear main oil seal out resulting in all of the oil in my vehicle to exit the engine during my drive. The service bulletin indicated that Chevrolet and gm knew about the condition and yet did nothing to solve the issue.

Failure Date: My wife was driving down the highway and she received a warning stating reduced engine power and service stabilitack. Wishing a few seconds of this her car died on the highway and would not start back up. Upon initial review the pcv line was blocked with ice as it was single digit temperature. When I checked the oil level there was nothing. The oil light never came on according to my wife. I put 2 quarts of oil in the car and it started back up, however it barely made it 4 miles back to the house before the oil was gone and the undercarriage of my vehicle was smoking from the oil coming out. This is exactly described in bulletin 14882.

My car has just over 107k miles and appears meet all criteria of said bulk item. However, upon speaking with Chevrolet about this bulletin. My car is not covered. Failure Date: The pcv valve is causing an issue with the engine. Due to the design it is trapping condensation and throwing it into the air intake and oil. Other customers have had damage to their engines due to this flaw. I've had the vehicle stall and die on me while driving.

When checking the air intake their is fluid in the manifold which shouldn't happen in a closed system. I've filed a complaint with gm, though many other customers have contacted them with the same issue and have been ignored. Failure Date: Vehicle running very rough and experiencing high oil consumption. Engine was clicking when accelerating and jerking back and fourth when slowing to a stop.

Dealer stated it was clogged pcv. A recall 14882 states this exact issue concerning 2010-2014 chevy Equinox with the ecotec 2.

The dealership and chevy customer care both stated my VIN was not under the recall even though it was the same exact problem with the same exact engine and model so I had to pay out of pocket. Total cost was approximately $900.

This is a known issue and chevy needs to cover this and reimburse for the cost. I have all documentation and a case number with gm on the matter.

Failure Date: While my 20 year old son was driving my 2012 chevy Equinox with 88567 miles to work along back country roads at 6am on a dark cold michigan morning he noticed the smell of burning oil while pulling into his employers parking lot. As it got lighter out thru the morning he noticed that the whole rear of the vehicle was covered in oil, with further investigation he discovered the whole under carriage was also covered in oil. Had him get vehicle towed to dealership where they diagnosed the issue as a rear main seal blown due to a clogged pcv valve, which matches a service bulletin (14882) in which dealership would not honor because of limited VIN's included per bulletin. Failure Date: 14882 special coverage adjustment-plugged pcv orifice in intake manifold. Dealer in columbus ne. 68601 ernest auto sales told me my 2010 VIN. Number not listed for the recall back main seal blowed out no warranty.

I see other people same problem with seal and again are cars not covered. I own 2 equinons 2010 and 2018. Maybe I need to look at other brands instead if you have a know problem and wont stand behind your product that's sad you make your decision and ill make mine!!! I was driving it started to smoke a little plus could smell it when I stoped.See. Failure Date: My car is a 2015 chevy Equinox that I have driven since I picked it up from the dealer with six miles on it. On or about February 8.

I started the car in the morning, after running for a few seconds it sounded like the oil was too low. I shut the car off checked the oil, found it low, I put two quarts in and started it again.

I checked it again saw it was low, I looked underneath and saw oil on the ground. I towed the car to my regular mechanic, he said it was a rear main seal.

During the repair he told me he was researching the car and learned that this is a common problem with this car, and while he is replacing the seal he wanted to clean the pcv system as well. I asked him to do what is necessary to repair the car. After paying over $1000.

00 my mechanic told me that I may want to call gm or NHTSA and try to get reimbursed because this is the same system that was recalled, just a year off. My wife called gm, the person she spoke with agreed that there may be an issue and asked for all documentation, my wife was shocked when the 1st representative told her that they knew about the problem. Then told her that a senior representative will call her back the next.

Today that senior representative called her back. I was home when this happened. After she explained what happened and what was done to the car the fist response she got was 'since we didn't take the car to a gm dealership there was nothing they could do' she then put me on the phone and I asked him that if the gm dealer fixed it would it be taken care of.? He then changed his tune telling me that it has not been established that a recall exists.

However, he did say that noting can be done just because I read something on the internet. I replied that yes I was doing research, yes, I did find others are having the same problem as the recall. If others are having the same problem. Why not another recall?See. Failure Date: On 2. 2019 around 11am I left work restoration hardware outlet 301 w main st, christiana, DE 19702 and drove across the street to get lunch at acme 1 university plaza, newark, DE 19702.

It was out and we had a few days of below. As I was leaving the acme parking lot all the lights came on in the dash.

I immediatley stopped and shut off car. Across the street was an exxon station on 300 chapman rd, newark, DE 19713.

The service person said I was leaking oil. He put in a quart then another it came right back out and said it could be a rear main seal. I did some research and found a special coverage adjustment that stated- plugged pcv orifice in intake manifold for the 2010-2014 Chevrolet Equinox equipped with 2.

4l ecotec engine (laf, lea or luk) 2. 4l engine (laf, lea or luk) that have experienced high oil consumption may also experience a frozen and/or plugged pcv (positive crankcase ventilation) system during cold weather operation. This condition may increase crankcase pressure leading to a rear crankshaft seal oil leak.

I know that gm needed to look at this so I had it towed to diver Chevrolet 2101 pennsylvania Ave, wilmington, DE 19806 (302) 482-8359. Almost a week later they called and said the rear main seal blew out and thats what was stated on the service order. I asked about the March 2015 bulletin no.: 14882. They said my car was not part of that group and it would be $3200 to fix. I asked how can this be when it clearly is the same issue stated in the bulletin exactly. Cold temps, frozen pvc, blown rear main. I was even told a few car were in during that cold snap with same issue, but those car had ext warranty or were part of the group VIN.

So now im here trying to get help from you. This is a known problem and they wont acknowledge it. Im a single mom with 2 kids and I dont know what to do.See. Failure Date: On January 31 my Equinox experienced a frozen pcv system, a known issue in 2010-2014 Equinox vehicles. The engine developed an oil leak and excessive crankcase pressure which blew the rear main seal rendering my vehicle inoperable.

I was on my way home from work, an approximate 10 mile drive, comprised of a short drive on a freeway and the majority of the trip on city streets. The problem started after I exited the freeway. I accelerated from a stop at a traffic signal and I noticed that my car sounded louder than usual.

At just a few miles from my home trouble lights (traction control and engine) illuminated on my dash along with the 'engine power is reduced' message. Thinking I had a traction control issue I continued to drive to my home, a mere 2 city blocks. At that time the oil pressure message appeared on the screen. I was in my driveway and oil dropped where I stopped. I had my car towed to my mechanic and he informed me of this issue and what happened to my car.

Failure Date: Smelled burning oil in garage. Checked under vehicle and noticed large puddle of oil and underside of rear engine soaked with it. Towed to dealership of purchase.

Was notified that it was pcv value having moisture/condensation in it and freezing. This occurrence put pressure on the engine and seals. The rear seal connecting to the transmission is what failed. It was a cold day. The car was in a parking lot until end of shift.

My wife said it did not start as fast as it normally does. There was not shuttering of the engine, no loud clacking sound and not one light icon lit up. I noticed a trail of oil into the garage in our driveway but no trail in the street. I assume it had just occurred when she was arriving home. She was braking to turn into our driveway.

Her route from work is primarily state roads with speeds of 35-55 mph and very often has deer crossing the roads as there are no road noise barriers or tall fencing. She arriving home at the normal time but I was able to pick up our sons. So she was able to just go home. The weather was cold (approx. 6-8 degrees). I have no reports, invoices or photos as the car is currently still in the shop since Friday February 1st.

Today is Wednesday February 6th 2019. I have found a lot of information online regarding this issue, TSB #14882. Seems to be very common.

Failure Date: My Equinox reduced engine power while driving. Prior to this there were no warning lights of any kind. I was told it was down 3 quarts of oil and that there was a leak from rear seal. My mechanic advised towing to the dealership as there are known problems of this in the Equinox's as well as a '14882 special coverage adjustment' offered by general motors. This special adjustment are for those Equinox's that experience high oil consumption and may experience a frozen or plugged positive crankcase ventilation system.

This causes increase crankcase pressure leading to a rear crankshaft seal oil leak. If the oil leak is not noticed and condition is not corrected, continued driving can cause damage to the engine. Gm stated on my receipt the cause of my problem was, 'moisture froze in the pcv system causing the crankcase to overpressurize'. However, my VIN number was not included in this special coverage adjustment even though I was within the mileage and year.

This is a major safety issue as I did not receive any warning lights of being low in oil and no engine pressure warning lights. There have been no recalls related to these issues. Failure Date: My wife was driving to work when her car broke down on a very very busy highway. Just before the broadway bridge crossing the missouri river entering downtown kansas city mo literally right before the bridge on the southbound side of 169 highway. The temperature outside was in the negatives.

She called me and I picked her up. Mind you I work nights so I was in bed. She had to wait in a freezer basically until I got there.

Which was about 35 mins. Hypothermia can take affect in that amount of time.

Luckily she had a blanket and an extra coat to cover up with. I dropped her off and went back to the car to wait on the tow truck. There is very little room to pull off the road where it broke down at. Another 10 yards and it would've been blocking a lane of traffic on the bridge. The tow truck gets there and is almost immediately rear ended by a distracted driver.

He gets backed up starts to get out and is almost sideswiped by another driver. He calls another tow truck to the scene to block traffic so he dosen't get hit. Finally at the shop. The mechanic looks it over and tells me that the rear main seal has blew out of the engine due to a frozen pcv valve. And the engine is toast because there's a lot of metal shavings on the dipstick.

And due to the knocking that the engine is making. $7000 for a remanufactured engine installed is the quote he gave me. A used engine would be cheaper but we'd run the risk of getting one that consumes too much oil. So that's out of the question. Then come to find out they know this a problem?! But are only covering certain vehicles. I'm beyond irritated at this point.

Not only have they endangered my wife. Not only have they endangered myself.

But they have also endangered the tow truck driver. All because they don't want to fix their faulty design. This type of stuff has gone on for far too long with automotive manufacturers. Failure Date: Tl the contact owns a 2014 Chevrolet Equinox. While driving 65 mph, the vehicle started to decelerate independently, the oil pressure warning indicator illuminated, and the vehicle stalled.

The contact was able to restart the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the pcv valve was obstructed. The blockage caused significant pressure in the engine, which caused the rear main seal between the engine and transmission to allow oil to pour from the seal. The vehicle was not repaired.

Tim lally Chevrolet (located at 24999 miles rd, bedford heights, OH 44128, (440) 232-2000) was notified of the failure. The manufacturer was contacted and provided case number: 9.

The approximate failure mileage was 107,000. Failure Date: I own a 2015 chevy Equinox that pcv system failed and cause major engine damage. The day issue happened is one of the coldest days in record in the state of missouri. The pcv system froze causing excessive pressure in the engine cause the rear main seal to blow. Once this happen the car start to loose excessive amounts of oil which lead to the engine damage. There is not a oil pressure gauge in the car so there was no way of telling if there was no oil pressure, only a oil light in which it did not come on.

How I found out I had the issue is when the engine started hammering. I shut off the engine quickly and had it rolled back to gm.

Where I was told that my engine is no good and I need a new one, which cost 7700 to fix. My car had the same issue as describe on the gm 14882 bulletin but still no help with the cost. After speaking with the service manager he tried to get good will warranty since im over my 100,000 mile warranty. But still no help, I have to pay for the engine my self because I still have the loan through gmac. The worst thing about the issue is that the service manager told me that this is a known issue and only certain cars are covered on the bulletin and that the bulletin only ties to the VIN on the car. Well reading up this is a huge issue and so far there are more complains then recall fixes. Someone needs to do something about it.

Failure Date: Your gm bulletin 14882 should be a complete recall for all Equinox's. This part is hazardous, and has cost way too many people alot of money. I have maintained my vehicle that I have only had 1 year and now because of your 'special' bulletin and bullcrap that it wasn't built in a special plant I have to spend more then what the truck is worth to put a brand new motor in my SUV. As I was driving down a busy highway my vehicle died in the middle of the road in -55 degree weather.

In conditions that the pcv rear seal system cannot handle and you all know this, but refuse to take action. How can you be ok with this, and allow people to continue purchase these vehicles? No at chevy, gm, nor at the dealership seem willing to help in any sense and it is really sad, we have been buying chevy since as long as I can remember, and it looks like I may have to start looking at Nissan or even Ford because at least they care about their customers. 1 year I owned the vehicle, and I either have to use it as a lawn ornament - or pay $8,100. 00 to fix it - unreal.

Failure Date: I was driving down a highway at 65 miles per hour my engine started to flutter when noticing that I pulled over right away and my engine shut off. I had to have my vehicle towed to the dealership after the dealership took a look at it they realized it was a pcv clog from condensation getting in to the pcv valve. I have 72000 miles on my vehicle so there is no more drive train warranty I bought the extended warranty however they will not cover it because they do not cover clogs. Upon researching this I found out that chevy had a lot of these and actually extended warranties on vehicles from 2010 to 2014 for the same issue.

They have never said anything about fixing the issue in the articles I have read. Upon hearing this information from the dealership I contacted another dealership which that they had 6 vehicles in their for this same exact thing they told me that it's a known issue especially when it gets cold. Chevrolet will not cover this knowing it is a problem. Attached is the service bulletin where it list the models and where chevy had extended the warranty for those make and models.See.

Failure Date: Pcv valve bulletin 14882. Car has been using excessive between oil changes. Since it had 50k miles. At the time the dealer said per chevy.

5 quarts is normal every 2500 miles. Recently the oil has become very dirty and im adding between 1 quart every 1000 miles. Took it to a mechanic said it appears to be related. Went to chevy dealer and said this bulletin does not apply to my VIN. Its within the same years, same issue but chevy will not cover it (spoke to chevy directly).

Failure Date: Driving to work on city street after getting off interstate the engine locked up (all the oil was forced out through the rear main seal) in my 2012 Chevrolet Equinox with only 76,542 miles. Luckily I was not on the interstate at 60 mph - who knows what could have happened? General motors knows about this pcv and excessive oil consumption issue. They have extended 'special coverage' for part of this problem. If letters were sent out I never received any.

This defect is happening more frequently - many complaints available on the internet. Maybe this 4 cylinder engine needs to be investigated before someone gets injured. The gm dealer said there was no neglect on my part but I had to pay $5194. 15 to have my engine replaced. Failure Date: January 22nd 2019 my way to work at the last traffic light the car lurched forward with my foot on the brake I pulled in work and parked I left at 5:30 p.

M remote started I was walking to my car it was loud I got in warning message to turn car off that the oil pressure was too low. Called aaa waited three hours in the cold with bronchitis and asthma called my mechanic I was having the car towed to his garage. January 25 mechanic said he thinks due to a frozen pcv valve there was pressure build up car spit the oil out he put oil in my car let it warm up he thought I should still have the dealer look at it. I drove the car not far to the dealer ganley rep came to waiting area told me the pcv valve froze and the high pressure blew my rear crankshaft seal the oil spilled out my battery was shot repair just under $ 2000. 00 he said this fault did damage to my timing chain no guarantee how long the timing chain would hold recommended replacing $ 1500. 00 I said do the seal and battery. I went home did google search Equinox 2013 pcv sp.

Bulletin 14882 popped up it covered Equinoxes between 2010-2014 not my VIN. Rep called said gm is willing to help me with the timing chain authorized it for $500. I told him what that bulletin said is exactly what happened with my car. Picked up my car Monday 02/04/19 and paid $ 2606. On 02/06/19 I called chevy spoke to rep duke who gave me a reference number # 9- told me a higher-level rep from chevy would call me. On 02/07/19 adam called and said the phone call was being recorded.

He said in a nice way that chevy had already helped with $ 1000. 00 towards the timing chain and I should be grateful for that because they were not going to help anymore. I told him this shouldnt have happened.

Is this verbatim for the call no but then again, I wasnt working off a script or recording the phone call like chevy is.

In the video above, we show you how to fix minor oil leaks in your 2010 Chevrolet Equinox. We will show you specifically how to determine if the fluid leaking from your Equinox is oil, check your oil level and fix the oil leak using stop leak. Extremely low oil levels can critically damage your engine, so it is important to be proactive about oil leaks, however small. Oil leaks in the 2010 Equinoxs with the 2.4 liter engine are often due to a bad seal in the drain plug - the metal washer in your drain plug can only be tightened a few times before it loses its ability to seal and should be replaced periodically to prevent leaking.

Replacing the metal washer should only be done when you change the oil in your Equinox, fortunately the video above shows how to fix the minor leak in the interim. Fixing minor oil leaks is fairly straightforward, but first, make sure that your engine is cold and that your Equinox is parked on a level surface when you check the oil level as both of these things can cause the oil level to read low. Check our video to see what type of fluid is leaking from your Equinox if you are unsure.
